Update: Auditions: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Update:

The directorial staff of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor(R) Dreamcoat is extending the audition date to include Wednesday, September 18 from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Wheaton Drama, Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale Street in Wheaton.

Characters vary from children to men and women up to the age of 60.  For an expanded description of roles, please read the full post.  An accompanist will be provided.  Bring sheet music and be prepared to sing 16-32 bars of your preferred song. Performance dates run Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from November 8 thru December 8.  For more  information contact director, Anthony Berg @ 630-730-0313

Wheaton Drama announces open auditions for the outstanding family musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat,” featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Auditions will be held at Playhouse 111 on Saturday, Sept. 14, from noon-5PM for children and adults; and on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 7PM-10PM for adults. Callbacks are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7PM by invitation only. Performances will run from Nov. 8 through Dec. 8. To schedule an audition, please contact the “Joseph” hotline @ 630-730-0313. Walk-ins will be accepted. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music for your 16 to 32 measures in the correct key. Please do not sing from the show, no Sondheim, and no a cappella singing. Please come dressed to move for the initial audition. Anthony Berg is a well-known area director, having recently staged “Legally Blonde” for Summer Place in Naperville. “This will be a wonderful production for families; join in the fun and audition,” Berg says.

Characters

Joseph: (21-35 years old, open ethnicity, Tenor) Actor should be physically fit and willing to perform shirtless. Joseph is the 11th son of Jacob. Actor should be likeable, charismatic, engaging, able to express wide-eyed innocence and later become a ruthless manipulator. Must be confident, yet humble, believing in his convictions.

The Brothers: All brothers are open on age and ethnicity. Below is only a guideline.

Reuben (30-60 Baritone/Tenor): Eldest son of Jacob, sings “One More Angel in Heaven.” Actor should be able to be sappy and then heartless with a smile. Southern cowboy accent

Simeon (30-60, Baritone/Tenor): Second son of Jacob, sings “Those Canaan Days.” Actor should be able to emote pain and suffering; grief and loss. French accent

Levi /Pharaoh (25-50, Baritone): Third son. He will also be portraying the Pharaoh and singing “Song of the King” and “Stone the Crows.” Actor should be able to assume a huge onstage presence where all eyes must be on him. A convincing actor can persuade the director away from the Elvis character type. Think of music icons with unmistakable personas.

Judah (25-50, Tenor): Fourth son. Sings “Benjamin Calypso.” Actor should be young at heart and a free spirit. He has more energy than all the other brothers combined. Reggae sound/Jamaican accent

Dan/Potiphar (25-50, Baritone): Fifth son. He will also be portraying Potiphar. Actor should be able to convey disgust and hatred toward Joseph, with an underlying sense of sympathy and understanding.

Naphtali (25-40, Tenor): Sixth son. He will sing in “The Brothers Come to Egypt” and the “Entr’acte.” Actor must play the odd man out, educated and seeking acceptance.

Gad/Baker (25-40, Tenor): Seventh son. He will also be portraying the Baker. Actor should be able to play self-centered and egotistical. A true show-off.

Asher/Butler (25-40, Tenor): Eighth son. He will also be portraying the Butler. Actor should be able to play subservient to the Lord and to Pharaoh.

Issachar (18-30, Tenor): Ninth son. He will sing in “The Brothers Come to Egypt” and the “Entr’acte.” Actor should be able to play excitable, interested, and a little annoying.

Zebulun (18- 30, Baritone/Tenor): Tenth son. He will sing in “The Brothers Come to Egypt” and the “Entr’acte.” Actor should be to play the Middle Child Syndrome Card.

Benjamin/Jacob: (16-25, Baritone): Youngest son. He will also be portraying Jacob. He will sing in “Joseph’s Coat” and the “Entr’acte.” Actor must play both the youngest and oldest characters. Jacob should be fatherly and emotional unstable, whereas, Benjamin should be curious and innocent.

The Wives: All Wives are truly open on age and ethnicity but will be matched with an appropriately aged Brother. Each wife will also be featured as either a Narrator or Dancer.

Wife of Reuben (Alto): She will be the Narrator for “Go, Go, Go Joseph”

Wife of Simeon (Soprano/Alto)- She will be a featured dancer in “Those Canaan Days” and be singing in the “Entr’acte”

Wife of Levi (Soprano/Alto): She will be the Narrator for “Pharaoh’s Story” and “Poor Poor Pharaoh”

Wife of Judah (Soprano/Alto): She will be the Narrator for “The Brothers Come to Egypt” and “Grovel, Grovel”

Wife of Dan/Potiphar’s Wife (Soprano): She will be a featured dancer and sing in the “Entr’acte”

Wife of Naphtali (Soprano/Alto): She will be the Narrator for “Jacob and Sons”

Wife of Gad (Soprano): She will be the Narrator for “Stone the Crows”

Wife of Asher (Soprano): She will be the Narrator for “Potiphar”

Wife of Issachar (Soprano/Alto): She will be the Narrator for “Joseph’s Dreams” and “Poor, Poor Joseph”

Wife of Zebulun (Alto): She will be the Narrator for the “Prologue”

Wife of Benjamin/Rachel (Soprano): She will be the Narrator for “Joseph’s Coat”

Children’s chorus: (7-16 years old) Open to boys and girls of any ethnicity. Director is looking to cast 10 to 20 children.
