Lyrics by Martin Charnin
Music by Charles Strouse

Director: James A Liesz
Musical Director: Douglas Orlyk
Choreographer: Sara N Harris
Production Manager: Carolyn Armstrong

Lyricist-Director Martin Charnin was looking for a Christmas gift in a bookstore in lower Manhattan in December of 1971, when he came upon a comic strip collection entitled "Little Orphan Annie, Her Life and Hard Times". Charnin was so taken by the book that he convinced composer, Charles Strouse and Librettist, Thomas Meehan to help create "Annie".

Charnin informed them that he was not interested in a comic strip musical, but a musical that was based upon "Orphan Annie" herself. He wanted the musical to speak out in favor of hope. He wanted Annie to stand as a metaphoric figure for innate decency, courage and optimism in the face of hard times, pessimism and despair. Annie opened on Broadway on April 21, 1977.
